Why The New ‘Leftovers’ Episode Was Its Best Yet

In its first two episode, “The Leftovers” struggled because it wanted to have its cigarette and smoke it too.

Creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta have made clear that we’ll never know what happened to the vanished two percent, which is a brave creative idea because it puts the audience in the same position as its cast and denies them what would be the most obvious payoff from the start.

To make up for this lack of mystery, however, “The Leftovers” has kept the motivations of character like the GR and Wayne Gilchrest from the audience entirely, making us wonder why these people do any of the things that we see them do. Continue →

Watch This Little Boy Serves Up The ‘Bad Romance’ Dance With Fearless Abandon

Remember being a kid and feeling the freedom to do whatever the hell you wanted? Back before anyone told you it was uncool or stupid to just clamber up on a stage and passionately dance to your favorite song?

You know, the time before society had told you that popstars make patently “girl”-centric music, or before you’d ever heard anyone make fun of someone else for dancing on their own?

Well this little kid is still living in those moments of freedom. Continue →

Love That ‘First Kiss’ Video? Here’s A New, Bolder Version

Remember that awesome First Kiss video that went crazy viral this past March? Well, filmmaker Tatia Pilieva is back at it, this time with a decidedly more daring request for twenty strangers.

In the name of tonight’s “Masters of Sex” Season Two premiere—which we’re completely psyched about—Pilieva’s “Undress Me” asks couples to disrobe each other and climb into bed together.

The result is as awkward, sweet and revealing as you’d expect. Continue →

World Cup + A ‘Doctor Who’ Trailer = The Best Sunday, Ever

OK, we’re going to try to not get all freakishly excited and overly hyperbolic about the new trailer (A non-teaser at last!) for “Doctor Who” season eight but OH MY GOODNESS is that ever a tall order.

Because — Gah! Jeez! Holy Mother of Daleks! — any hypothetical worries one could have had about the BBC franchise after the loss of our beloved Eleven have been squashed with the quickness thanks to the trailer! It debuted on BBC One during Sunday’s World Cup finals, because where else should the biggest show in the universe debut but during the biggest sporting event in this wee galaxy of ours, eh?

In 60 seconds, Peter Capaldi has managed to sell us on his iteration. Continue →

Australia Has Another Reason To Be Proud Of Olympian Ian Thorpe

One of Australia’s most decorated athletes – five-time Olympic gold medalist Ian Thorpe – has bravely come out as being gay.

The swimmer has been plagued with the question since he was very young – at 14, he was catapulted into the public eye as the youngest male ever to represent Australia at the 1998 Perth World Championships – he left a victor, making him the country’s youngest individual male World Champion.

From there, Thorpe – lovingly nicknamed the “Thorpedo” – blazed a trail of victory through his country and the world, resulting in a career that boasts 11 World Championship gold medals, five Olympic gold medals, and 13 individual world records. Continue →
